From the introduction, the Sand family ate on a different one of
five Carolina Cays each evening, with the Cays connected in a series
of bridges going north from Southern Cay, the sixth island. The 5th
bridge cannot be Sunken Galleon Bridge (clue 1), Golden Arch
Bridge (6), Royal Reef Bridge (10), or Blue Marlin Bridge (13)
and is therefore Sir Francis Drake Bridge. In clue 7, then,
the Sands ate on the 5th, or northernmost, cay on Thursday,
after crossing the Drake Bridge from the 4th cay where the town of
Spanish Harbor is located and Shark Cay, the 3rd island in the
string. By clue 4, the family dined in the town of Kingsport on
Tuesday evening. By clue 9. they drove through Kingsport only
one other evening after having eaten there; that evening must be
the Thursday the Sands were on the 5th island. Kingsport then
cannot be on the 1st cay north of Southern Cay, because the
Sands would have had to pass it to get to where they dined on
Wednesday and Friday as well. Similarly, Kingsport cannot be on
the 2nd cay, because the family would have had to pass through
Kingsport on at least either Wednesday or Friday. So, on Tuesday,
the Sands ate at Kingsport on Shark Cay. By clue 9, therefore,
they were in Spanish Harbor on Monday. They crossed the Sunken
Galleon Bridge onto the 4th cay on Monday (1). By clue 5, the
day after they ate at a restaurant in Ocean City, the Sands drove
through Ocean City to eat in Queenstown. Since Ocean City isn't
on the 1st cay north of Southern Cay (12), it is on the 2nd cay;
and Queenstown is on the 5th. By elimination, Delmar Beach is on
the 1st cay going north; and the family dined there on Wednesday
or Friday. If the Sands had eaten in Delmar Beach on Wednesday,
and thus Ocean City on Friday, they would have eaten at Joe's Crab
Shack in Kingsport on Tuesday (8). By clues 3 and 14, the dinner
at Feeney's Fish & Chips would have been in Delmar Beach. By
clue 6, then, the Jamaican Jerk Cafe would be in Ocean City, and
the Golden Arch bridge would connect the cays where Ocean City
and Delmar Beach are situated. Grand Cay would then be the 1st
cay and would be connected to Southern Cay by Blue Marlin Bridge
(13). The Royal Reef Bridge would connect the 2nd and 3rd islands.
Therefore, McDonald's would be on one of the 4th and 5th cays and
Petit Cay would be the other of the two cays (10). But then
the McDonald's would have to be on either Blackbeard Cay or Coral
Cay, a conflict with clue 2. So, the Sands ate in Delmar Beach
on Friday and Ocean City on Wednesday, with Joe's Crab Shack
located in Queenstown (8). By clues 3 and 14, Feeney's Fish &
Chips is in Ocean City. McDonald's isn't on Blackbeard Cay,
Coral Cay (2), or Petit Cay (10). If it were on Grand Cay,
then by clue 13, Grand Cay would be the 1st cay in the string
and would be connected to Southern Cay by Blue Marlin Bridge.
However, the Sands crossed Royal Reef Bridge on the way to the
McDonald's (10), so it would have to be the 1st bridge north of
Southern Cay. The McDonald's must be on Shark Cay. By clue 6,
the Jamaican Jerk Cafe is in Delmar Beach, and the Gold Arch
Bridge connects the 1st cay to Southern Cay. By elimination,
Mr. Pigg's BBQ is in Spanish Harbor. By clue 13, Grand Cay is the
2nd one and is connected to the 1st cay by Blue Marlin Bridge. Royal
Reef Bridge connects Grand and Shark Cays. By clues 10 and 11,
Petit Cay is the 4th cay in the string. The Jamaica Jerk Cafe is on
Coral Cay and Joe's Crab Shack on Blackbeard Cay (6). In sum, the
five cays in order from south to north and where the Sands dined
on each are as follows:
Gold Arch Bridge to
- Coral Cay, at the Jamaica Jerk Cafe in Delmar Beach on Friday
Blue Marlin Bridge to
- Grand Cay, at Feeney's Fish & Chips in Ocean City on Wednesday
Royal Reef Bridge to
- Shark Cay, at McDonald's in Kingsport on Tuesday
Sunken Galleon Bridge to
- Petit Cay, at Mr. Pigg's BBQ in Spanish Harbor on Monday
Sir Francis Drake Bridge to
- Blackbeard Cay, at Joe's Crab Shack in Queenstown on Thursday
Cays Gateway Bridge to the mainland
