From the introduction, the rings of tulips are numbered 1 on the outside
through 5, the bull's-eye, on the inside. Neither the White Duchess (clue 3),
China Pink (6), nor Blue Parrot (9) tulips are in ring 1 or 5, so the All
Gold and Fire Queen are, in some order, with the three varieties in clues
3, 6, and 9 occupying rings 2, 3, and 4, in some order. By clue 1, Maureen
planted neither the All Gold nor the Fire Queen tulips. By clue 6, then,
the China Pinks are in ring 3 or ring 4. If the China Pinks were in ring
4, Waters would have planted ring 5 (6). Either the Blue Parrot or
White Duchess tulips would be in ring 3. Trying the White Duchesses in ring
3, since Carmen isn't Waters (7), Carmen would have planted the China
Pinks (3). The Blue Parrots would be in ring 2; and since Diana isn't Waters
(7), Diana would have planted the White Duchess ring (9)--no (8). Trying the
Blue Parrots in ring 3, since Diana isn't Waters (7), Diana would have planted
the China Pinks (9). Ring 2 would be White Duchess tulips, so Spade would
have planted ring 1 (3); and since Carmen isn't Waters (7), Carmen would have
done the Blue Parrots (3). By clue 9, Plant would have contributed the White
Duchess tulips. Then Maureen in clue 6, who isn't Plant (4), would be Spade
and would have planted either the All Gold or Fire Queen tulips--which she
did not (1). Therefore, the China Pink tulips can't work as ring 4 and must
be in ring 3. Since Maureen didn't plant ring 1 (1), she did ring 2 (6).
If the White Duchess tulips were in ring 4 and the Blue Parrots in ring 2,
Carmen would have planted the bull's-eye (3). Since Carmen isn't Waters
(7), Waters would have planted ring 4 (6). Since Diana isn't Waters (7), by
clue 9, she would have planted ring 3, which she did not (8). So, the White
Duchess tulips comprise ring 2 and the Blue Parrots ring 4. Spade planted
ring 1 (3). Diana did ring 5 (9). Since Diana isn't Waters (7), Waters
planted ring 4 (6). Since Carmen isn't Waters (7), Carmen contributed ring
3 (3). Maureen isn't Plant (4); by clue 9, then, Carmen is Plant. By clue
10, Oscar is Waters and Jimmy Spade. Jimmy planted the Fire Queen and Diana
the All Gold tulips (5). By clue 2, Diana is Bloom and Maureen Flowers. In
summary, the Tulip Circle rings from outermost to bull's-eye are
- 1 - Fire Queen by Jimmy Spade
- 2 - White Duchess by Maureen Flowers
- 3 - China Pink by Carmen Plant
- 4 - Blue Parrot by Oscar Waters
- 5 - All Gold by Diana Bloom
