From the introduction, eight players reached the quarterfinals, four won to
meet in the semifinals, and two then played for the championship. Matches
were best 2-out-of-3 sets. By clue 11, Heather lost a total of four sets
during the last three rounds; the only way this is possible is that Heather
lost a set in each of the quarter- and semifinals and then lost two sets in
the final. So, Heather is 2003 Wobbledown runner-up. By clue 3, Faith lost
a semifinal match 6-4, 6-3; she couldn't have played Heather in the
semifinals, since Heather had to lose a set in that round (clue 11), so
Faith lost the other semifinal than the one Heather won. By clue 11, Miss
Gonzales lost three matches during the three rounds, so she had to reach
either the finals or semifinals. If she had reached the finals, she would
have defeated Heather (11) there and would have beaten Faith in the semis,
losing one set in each of her three matches; however, Faith didn't win a
set in the semifinals (3), so this cannot work. Miss Gonzales lost in the
semifinals; and since she isn't Faith (7), she lost to Heather. By clue
11, Miss Gonzales also lost a set in her quarterfinal victory. By clue 2.
Erica defeated Miss Wade 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Erica isn't Miss
Gonzales, who lost a quarterfinal set, so she won the fourth quarterfinal
match to the three won by Faith (3), Heather, and Miss Gonzales. Erica
also must have defeated Faith in the semifinals and Heather in the finals.
By clue 5, Miss Trabert lost her last match 6-3, 6-0, not in the finals;
so she isn't Heather, nor is she Faith (3). Miss Trabert also couldn't
have lost to Heather or Miss Gonzales in the quarterfinals, since they
both lost a set in that round. Miss Trabert lost to Faith in the
quarterfinals. Heather isn't Evert (8). By clue 4, then, since Erica
upended Faith 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, Erica Evert defeated Heather
Riggs 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 for the title. Since Beth stopped Miss King in one
match (6), Beth must be Miss Gonzales; and her win over Miss King came
in the quarterfinals. Debbie lost in the quarterfinals, then, but she
did win a set 6-0 (1), so she played either Heather or Beth. Since she
isn't Miss King (1), she played Heather. By clue 7, Faith is Connelly and
Debbie Connors. Alicia is Miss Trabert (9), while Jenny is King and Cheryl
Wade (10). Summarizing, the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals of this
year's Wobbledown Women's Tennis Championship had these results:
- Quarterfinals: Erica Evert def. Cheryl Wade, Faith Connelly def. Alicia
Trabert, Heather Riggs def. Debbie Connors, Beth Gonzales def. Jenny King
- Semifinals: Erica Evert def. Faith Connelly, Heather Riggs def.
Beth Gonzales
- Final: Erica Evert def. Heather Riggs
