From the introduction, no two of the five fancy jack-o'-lanterns sold for
the same sum. By clue 8, the lowest-priced jack-o'-lantern sold for $40,
while the five together brought the Art Club $330. By clue 1, Jamie's
jack-o'-lantern cost twice as much as Karloff's, while by clue 6, the
jack-o'-lantern Lisa carved sold for twice that of the one with the
ghost theme. If the two clues overlap, either Lisa is Karloff or Jamie
carved the ghost jack-o'-lantern. If Lisa were Karloff, then letting
the ghost jack-o'-lantern sell for the low of $40 would make Lisa's go
for $80 and Jamie's for $160 (clues 1, 6)--a total of $280, leaving $50
for the other two jack-o'-lanterns (8) so that one would have to cost
less than $40, contradicting clue 8. Similarly, if Jamie had done the
ghost theme, if Karloff's creation had sold for $40, Jamie's then for $80,
and Lisa's for $160 (1, 6) for a total of $280, the $50 remaining would
mean at least one sale for less than the $40 minimum in clue 8. Therefore,
four of the five pumpkins are given in clues 1 and 6: Jamie's at 2X
Karloff's and Lisa's at 2X the ghost-themed one. Three of the artistic
jack-o'-lanterns are given in clue 2: Billy's, which sold for $10 more
than the skeleton-themed one, which sold for $10 more than Stein's. If
Billy were Karloff, even if Stein's pumpkin sold for $40, the least Billy's
creation could have brought in would be $60, with Jamie's then selling
for at least $120 (1). By clue 6, Lisa's jack-o'-lantern made at least
$80 for the club. Summing, we would have a minimum of $300, leaving at
most $30 for the fifth sale--no (8). Similarly, if Billy had done the
ghost jack-o'-lantern, even if Stein's pumpkin sold for $40, the least Billy's
creation could have brought in would be $60, with Lisa's then selling
for at least $120 (6). By clue 1, Jamie's jack-o'-lantern made at least
$80 for the club. Summing, we would have a minimum of $300, leaving at
most $30 for the fifth sale--no (8). So, Billy's jack-o'-lantern is the
fifth one to the four in clues 1 and 6. If Stein in clue 2 were Jamie,
even if Karloff's carving sold for the low of $40, clues 1 and 2 would
give sales figures of $40, $80, $90, and $100 for a total of $310, making
the fifth sale $20 (8)--a conflict with clue 8. Similarly, if Stein were
Lisa and the ghost jack-o'-lantern sold for the low of $40, combining clues
6 and 2 would give sales figures of $40, $80, $90, and $100--the sum of $310
then making the fifth carving a $20 sale, no (8). Stein must have carved
the ghost jack-o'-lantern. By clues 2 and 6, Lisa couldn't have done the
skeleton pumpkin, since the minimum difference between Lisa's and Stein's
creations must be $40. If Jamie had done the skeleton jack-o'-lantern,
Karloff would have raised $40 for the club, Jamie $80 (1), Stein $70,
Billy $90 (2), and Lisa $140 (6)--a conflicting total of $420 (8). So,
Karloff carved the skeleton-themed pumpkin. Then combining clues 1, 2,
and 6, Stein's jack-o'-lantern sold for the least, $40, Lisa's went for
$80, Karloff's skeleton carving sold for $50, Billy's work brought in $60
and Jamie's creation brought $100 to the Art Club. By clue 4, Charlie
carved the ghost jack-o'-lantern; Debby is Karloff. By clue 7, Lisa is
Lugosi; and Billy's jack-o'-lantern theme was Count Dracula. Lisa's
jack-o'-lantern had the black cat motif and Jamie's the witch (3).
Billy is Franken and Jamie Chaney (5). In sum, the Arty Jack-O'-Lanterns
sold as follows:
- Jamie Chaney, witch, $100
- Lisa Lugosi, black cat, $80
- Billy Franken, Count Dracula, $60
- Debby Karloff, skeleton, $50
- Charlie Stein, ghost, $40
