| From the introduction, three men (David, Ian, Kevin) and two women (Laurie,
Michelle) are working as interns for each of the partners in the law
offices of Sinker, Swimmer, Wade, Flotsam, and Jetsam. By clue 5, Mr.
Cochran is working one floor below where another intern works for
partner Swimmer, while the latter works one floor below the intern
employed in tax law. Michelle works two floors below the property
law offices (clue 1). Combining clues 1 and 5, then, there are four
possible arrangements: (1) the property law office is on the 5th floor
and Michelle works in tax law; (2) the property law office is one floor
above the tax law spaces and Michelle works for Swimmer; (3) Swimmer
is the property law expert and Michelle works one floor below Mr.
Cochran; and (4) Mr. Cochran is in the 3rd floor property law offices
and Michelle works on the 1st floor. Trying (1), by clues 5 and 1,
property law would occupy the 5th floor, Michelle would work in tax
law on the 3rd floor, partner Swimmer's spaces would be on the 2nd floor,
and Mr. Cochran would work on the 1st. By clue 8, Laurie would have to
be on the 4th floor, and Swimmer would be the patent law expert--no (2).
So, arrangement (1) does not work. Trying (2), by clues 5 and 1,
property law would be one floor above tax law, which would be one floor
above Swimmer's offices where Michelle would be working, which would be
one floor above where Mr. Cochran would work. By clues 8 and 2, Laurie
would be in tax law for the summer, with patent law then Mr. Cochran's
summer work. Since Ian isn't working in the property law offices (9),
by clue 3, Ian would be on the 1st floor and Mr. Cochran would be in
partner Flotsam's employ. Laurie would work for Jetsam, and law
student Reno would be in property law (7). Laurie would be Ms. Ashcroft,
and Michelle would be working in criminal law (10). By elimination,
Ian would be in civil law. However, by clue 9), Ian would be Bailey--who
isn't working in civil law (4). So, possibility (2) fails. Trying (4),
by clues 5 and 1, Michelle would be working on the 1st floor, Mr.
Cochran would be in the property law offices on the 3rd floor, Swimmer's
offices would be on the 4th floor, and the tax law spaces would be on the
5th. By clue 10, Ms. Ashcroft would be Laurie and work on the 5th floor
(8). However, the patent law offices would then be on the 3rd floor
with the property law offices (8). So, trial (4) fails. Arrangement (3)
puts Michelle working one floor below Mr. Cochran, who works one floor
below property law specialist Swimmer, whose offices are one floor below
those of the tax law expert. By clue 8, Laurie either works in tax
law or works for Swimmer. If Laurie were working in tax law and Mr.
Cochran then in patent law, Michelle would be Ms. Ashcroft and the
criminal law offices would be on the 1st floor (10). By clue 7, intern
Reno would be with Swimmer and Mr. Cochran with Jetsam. By clues 3 and
9, Ian would work in criminal law on the 1st floor, and Michelle would
work for partner Flotsam. Ian would be Bailey (9) and Laurie Ginsburg.
Ian Bailey would work in criminal law for Sinker (11)--no (4). So, Laurie
doesn't work in tax law and works for Swimmer. By clue 8, Michelle works in
the patent law offices. By clue 3, Ian either works on the 1st floor below
Michelle for Flotsam on the 2nd or works in tax law. If Ian were in the
1st floor offices and partner Flotsam in the 2nd, Ian couldn't be Reno (7);
nor is Ian Ginsburg (9) or Ashcroft (10). Ian would be Bailey and in
criminal law (4), with Michelle then Ms. Ashcroft (10). Laurie would be
Reno; and Mr. Cochran would work for Jetsam (7), while Ginsburg would be
working in tax law. However, Ian Bailey would be working in criminal law
for partner Wade (4)--no (11) So, Ian is interning in the tax law offices
on the 4th floor, with partner Flotsam's spaces on the 5th floor (3). By
clue 10, Laurie is Ms. Ashcroft; and Mr. Cochran is working in criminal law.
By elimination, Flotsam's specialty is civil law--with David interning for
Flotsam and Kevin in criminal law (6). By clue 7, Jetsam is Ian's summer
boss; and David is Reno. Ian is Bailey and Michelle Ginsburg (9). Michelle
is with partner Wade and Kevin with Sinker (11). In sum, the five legal
interns are working as follows:
- 1st - Michelle Ginsburg in patent law for Wade
- 2nd - Kevin Cochran in criminal law for Sinker
- 3rd - Laurie Ashcroft in property law for Swimmer
- 4th - Ian Bailey in tax law for Jetsam
- 5th - David Reno in civil law for Flotsam
