From the introduction, no two swim club leaders have swum the same number of laps.
By clue 3, Katie has swum 40 more laps than the Brooks girl, who has swum 40 more
than the best swimmer at the Oak Ridge pool; while by clue 5, Carrie swam
40 more laps than the Beech Shore club leader. So, between these two clues,
either all five swimmers are named or there is overlap--since no two have done
the same number of laps, either Katie swims at Beech Shore or Carrie has
the most laps at Oak Ridge. If all five were named between the two clues,
then either Katie (clue 3) or Carrie (clue 5) would have swum 200 laps (1).
If Katie had swum the 200 laps, the Brooks girl would have totaled 160
and the Oak Ridge swimmer 120 (3). Then, by clues 1 and 5, the Beech Shore club
member would have done the fewest, 80 (1). However, Carrie then would
also have swum 120 laps (5), necessitating overlap between clues 3 and 5
with Carrie the Oak Ridge club champion. If Carrie had done the 200 laps
(1), the Beech Shore swimmer would have swum 160 (5). Then, in clue 3,
the Oak Ridge member would have swum the fewest laps, 80 (1). However,
Katie then would have done 160 laps and be the Beech Shore swimmer. So,
all five cannot be named between clues 3 and 5; there must be one of the
two overlaps given above between the two clues. Trying the possibility
that Katie swims at Beech Shore, between clues 3 and 5, either Carrie would have
swum the 200 laps (1) or the fifth swimmer to the four would have totaled the 200
laps with the Oak Ridge swimmer then doing the low of 80. However, in
either case, by clues 3 and 5, Carrie would have to have done the 200
laps, Kelly from Beech Shores would have swum 160, the Brooks girl would
have totaled 120, and the Oak Ridge swimmer the 80--so that the fifth
swimmer would have had a total between 80 and 200. By clue 2, the
Rivers girl swam twice as many laps as the Maple Creek club swimmer. The
latter can't be Carrie or the Brooks girl or the Rivers girl would have done
more than 200 laps; the Maple Creek swimmer would be the fifth one. The
Rivers girl then has to be one of the four; she wouldn't be Katie, or the
Maple Creek swimmer would have swum 80 laps and wouldn't be the Oak Ridge
laps leader or the Maple Creek swimmer would have done 40 laps, contradicting
clue 1. She would be Carrie, and the Maple Creek swimmer would have swum
100 laps. However, there is no way for clue 4 to fit into this arrangement.
Therefore, the overlap between clues 3 and 5 is that Carrie swims at Oak
Ridge. Between clues 3 and 5, then, either Katie has swum the 200 laps (1) or
the fifth swimmer to the four has swum the 200 laps with the Beech Shore swimmer
then doing the low of 80. However, in either case, by clues 3 and 5, Katie
would have swum the 200 laps, the Brooks girl would have swum 160, Carrie
from Oak Ridge would have totaled 120, and the Beech Shore swimmer the
80--so that the fifth swimmer would have a total between 80 and 200.
By clue 2, the Rivers girl swam twice as many laps as the Maple Creek club
swimmer. The latter can't be Katie or the Brooks girl or the Rivers girl
would have done more than 200 laps; the Maple Creek swimmer is the fifth
one. The Rivers girl then has to be one of the four; she isn't Carrie, or
the Maple Creek swimmer would have swum 60 laps, and isn't the the Beech Shore
laps leader, or the Maple Creek swimmer would have done 40 laps, contradicting
clue 1. She is Katie, and the Maple Creek swimmer has swum
100 laps. By clue 4, Jenny is the Brooks girl; and the Poole girl from
Beech Shore did 80 laps. Jenny swims for Aspen Terrace and Katie for Pine
Valley (4). By clue 5, Carrie's last name is Waters; and the Lake girl
swims at Maple Creek. The Lake girl isn't Vicki (2) and is Marcie; Vicki
is the Poole girl. In sum, the five club lap leaders have lap totals as follows:
- 200 -- Katie Rivers, Pine Valley
- 160 -- Jenny Brooks, Aspen Terrace
- 120 -- Carrie Waters, Oak Ridge
- 100 -- Marcie Lake, Maple Creek
- 80 -- Vicki Poole, Beech Shore
