By clue 1, three of the food fighters are Jeff, the one who threw the hot
dog, and the one who got hit by the Caesar salad. By clue 5, Nina got hit
by the hot dog; she is therefore the fourth food fighter to the three in
clue 1. The one who threw the spaghetti isn't Jeff and didn't get hit by
the Caesar salad (clue 6); so the one who threw the spaghetti is either
Nina or the fifth food fighter to the four already recovered. Testing the
latter possibility, by clue 4, the person who threw the Caesar salad and
got hit by the lemon pie would be Jeff. By the introduction, no two
students hit each other with food; therefore, Nina would have thrown the
lemon pie--which she did not (5). So, the one who threw the spaghetti is
Nina. The food fighter who threw the Caesar salad and was hit with the
lemon pie in clue 4 is either Jeff or the fifth person to the four already
recovered. If Jeff had thrown the Caesar salad and been hit by the lemon
pie, by the intro, the fifth person would have thrown the lemon pie and
been hit by the spaghetti. By elimination, the one who threw the hot dog
would have been beaned by butterscotch pudding, and the food fighter who got
hit by the Caesar salad would have thrown the butterscotch pudding. However,
by clue 2, there is no way for Ben to fit into this arrangement. So,
the person who threw the Caesar salad and was hit with the lemon pie in
clue 4 is the fifth person to the four already recovered. By the intro,
Jeff threw the wedge of lemon pie. Then the one who got hit by the Caesar
salad threw the butterscotch pudding. From the intro, Jeff got hit by the spaghetti;
so the food fighter who threw the hot dog got hit by the butterscotch pudding. Ben
must have thrown the Caesar salad and gotten hit by the lemon pie (2).
By clue 3, Sara hit Casey with the butterscotch pudding. In sum, the food
fighters delivered blows as follows:
- Ben hit Sara with the Caesar salad
- Casey hit Nina with the hot dog
- Jeff hit Ben with the lemon pie
- Nina hit Jeff with the spaghetti
- Sara hit Casey with the butterscotch pudding
