By clue 4, one forard scored twice as many points as the other forward;
while by clue 5, Jenny scord twice as many points as one of the two guards,
who tallied twice as many as the other guard. Since no two players scored
the same number of points (clue 1), either Jenny is the lower scoring
forward or Jenny is the center and all five scorers are named between
the two clues. If Jenny were the lower scoring forward, we can test
the combinations of clues 4 and 5 as follows: lower scoring guard,
higher scoring guard, Jenny, higher scoring forward, center (who would
have scored 64 - the total of the other four). 1, 2, 4, 8 and
2, 4, 8, 16 conflict with clue 1, since three of the players scored in
double figures; 3, 6, 9, 18, 28 conflicts with clue 7; 4, 8, 16, 32, 4
contradicts clue 1; and 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and higher all add up to more
than 64. Therefore, all five players are named between clues 4 and 5,
with Jenny playing center for the Wildcats. We can now test the
combinations of clues 4 and 5 as follows: lower scoring guard, higher
scoring guard, center Jenny, lower scoring forward, higher scoring forward.
1, 2, 4, etc., and 2, 4, 8, etc. contradict clue 1; 3, 6, 12 leave 43
for the two forwards, which cannot work given clue 4; 5, 10, 20 leave 29
which cannot work given clue 4; 6, 12, 24 leave 22 which cannot work
given clue 4; 7, 14, 28, 5, 10 contradict clue 7; 8, 16, 32 leave 8
which cannot work given clue 4; 9, 18, 36 leave 1 which cannot work given
clue 4; and 10, 20, 40 and higher all add up to more than 64. This
gives us 4, 8, 16, 12, 24, which satisfies all the clues. By clue 2,
the Kidd girl scored at least 18 points and thus must be the higher
scoring forward. By clue 9, Kerrie scored 6 points or fewer and must be
the lower scoring guard. Erin is the higher scoring guard (6). Alice
plays forward and scored 12 points (8), with Rhonda then the Kidd girl.
By clues 3 and 8, the Iverson girl is center Jenny. The Duncan girl
is Alice with 12 points and the Miller girl Kerrie with 4 (7). Erin is
the Carter girl. In sum, the Wild Lake Wildcats won 64-63 by scoring
points as follows:
- G Erin Carter, 8
- G Kerrie Miller, 4
- C Jenny Iverson, 16
- F Rhonda Kidd, 24
- F Alice Duncan, 12
