By clue 1, the total rental for the five properties was $13,000, with the one
renting for the lowest amount bringing in $1,500. By clue 3, the Admiral's
Fancy cost twice as much to rent as the cottage on Fish Alley; while by clue 4,
the Sea Drift cost twice as much to rent as the cottage on Shell Street. If
there were overlap between the two clues, i.e., the Admiral's Fancy were on Shell
Street or the Sea Drift were on Fish Alley, three of the five rentals would be
$1,500, $3,000, and $6,000--leaving $2,500 for the other two cottage rentals (clue 1).
This would make the rental of at least one of them be under $1,500, contradicting
clue 1. Therefore, we have four different cottages named between clues 3 and 4.
By clue 5, the cottage on Decatur Street rented for $2,500; it can be neither the
Admiral's Fancy nor the Sea Drift, or the cottage on Fish Alley (3) or the
one on Shell Street (4) would have rented for $1,250, a conflict with clue 1. So,
the cottage on Decatur Street is the fifth one to the four in clues 3 and 4. By
clue 7, the Sea Drift is on Beach Street and the Admiral's Fancy on Atlantic Avenue.
Either the cottage on Fish Alley or the one on Shell Street rented for the low
of $1,500 dollars, with either the Admiral's Fancy or the Sea Drift respectively
renting for $3,000. Added to the $2,500 from the Decatur Street cottage, we would
have a total of $7,000, leaving $6,000 (1) for the other two of the cottages in
clue 3 or clue 4. Given the two-to-one ratio of rents, one rented for $4,000 and
the other for $2,000. By clue 2, the Admiral's Fancy on Atlantic Avenue rented for
$500 more than the Sand Dollar. The Admiral's Fancy then could not have been the
$4,000 rental, since there is no rental for $3,500. Therefore, the Admiral's Fancy
rented for $3,000, the Sand Dollar is on Decatur Street (2), and the cottage on
Fish Alley rented for $1,500 dollars (3). The Sea Drift rental was for $4,000,
with the Shell Street Cottage renting for $2,000 (4). By clue 6, the Shell Street
cottage is the Blue Dolphin. The Coral Reef is on Fish Alley. In sum, the five
cottages rented over Labor Day weekend rented as follows:
- Sea Drift on Beach Street, $4,000
- Admiral's Fancy on Atlantic Avenue, $3,000
- Sand Dollar on Decatur Street, $2,500
- Blue Dolphin on Shell Street, $2,000
- Coral Reef on Fish Alley, $1,500
