From the introduction, the clues give the 10 tulip gardens surrounding Tulip
Lake along Tulip Walk in clockwise order, with each garden having a statue
of a different Tulip City luminary and a different tulip hybrid in it. By
clue 1, the Celebration garden is just before the statue of the painter,
which immediately precedes the monument to Harriet Slater on the walk; while
by clue 5, the state senator's memorial is followed immediately by the statue
of Wilhelmina Shelley and then the King Midas tulips. Since Harriet Slater
wasn't the senator (clue 14), since the painter isn't Wilhelmina Shelley (10),
and since the statue of Wilhelmina Shelley isn't in the garden with the
Celebration tulips (9), six different gardens are named between the two clues.
By clue 16, three consecutive gardens are the one with the Daniel Walker statue,
the one with the Swan Wings tulips, and the one dedicated to the jazz musician
born in Tulip City. Since the musician wasn't Harriet Slater (2), since the
musician's statue isn't in the garden with the Celebration tulips (9) and
since the statue of Harriet Slater isn't in the Swan Wings bed (14), clue 16
does not overlap with clue 1. Since the jazz artist's statue isn't in the
garden with the King Midas tulips (2), since the senator's statue isn't in
the same bed as the Swan Wings tulips (14), and since the statue of Daniel
Walker isn't among the King Midas tulips (19), there is also no overlap
between clue 16 and clue 5. Therefore, among clues 1, 5, and 16, nine of the
10 gardens are named in three sets of three gardens located consecutively
clockwise along Tulip Walk: the Celebration garden, the garden with the
statue of the painter in it, and the bed where the Harriet Slater memorial
is situated (1); the garden where the state senator's statue is, the one where
the statue of Wilhelmina Shelley sits, and the garden with the King Midas
tulips (5); and the garden where Daniel Walker's statue is placed, the Swan
Wings garden, and the garden where the jazz musician is commemorated (16).
If we arbitrarily start with the gardens in clue 1, then either the gardens
in clue 5 must follow immediately or follow with one intervening bed along
Tulip Walk or the gardens in clue 16 must follow immediately or follow with
one intervening bed along the path around Tulip Lake. Trying the latter
possibility, we will first test the gardens in clue 16 following immediately
after those in clue 1 and then test the gardens in clue 16 following those in
clue 1 with one garden in between. In the first case, these gardens would be
in consecutive clockwise order around Tulip Lake: 1st) the Celebration tulips,
2nd) the painter's statue, 3rd) the statue of Harriet Slater, 4th) the statue
of Daniel Walker, 5th) the Swan Wings tulips, and 6th) the statue of the jazz
artist. Then the three gardens in clue 5 would follow those in clue 16 either
immediately or with one intervening garden. In the first instance, the garden
with the statue of the jazz musician would be followed next by the garden with
the senator's memorial (7th), then by the one with the statue of Wilhelmina
Shelley (8th), and then by the garden with the King Midas tulips (9th) in it.
The 10th garden would be between the one with the King Midas tulips and the one
with the Celebration tulips in clue 1. Adding clue 12, where the Fancy Frills
garden is followed by the one with the police chief's statue and then by the
one with Walter Harding's statue in it, to what we have, the information
in clue 12 itself makes it impossible for the Fancy Frills gardens
to be 2nd or 6th. Since the garden with the statue of Walter Harding was
first opened in 1958 (12) and the bed of Swan Wings tulips in 2003 (3), the
Fancy Frills tulip bed wouldn't be 3rd. Since the garden with the police
chief's statue was opened in 1969 (18) and the Swan Wings garden in 2003 (3),
the Fancy Frills tulip garden wouldn't be 4th. The police chief wasn't
Wilhelmina Shelley and the police chief's statue isn't among the King Midas
tulips (18), so the Fancy Frills gardens wouldn't be 7th or 8th. Finally,
since the painter wasn't Walter Harding (6), the Fancy Frills gardens wouldn't
have been 10th. Therefore, the three gardens in clue 5 couldn't immediately
follow when those in clues 1 and 16 are consecutive. In the second instance
of those in clue 5 being the 8th (senator's statue), 9th (Wilhelmina Shelley's
statue), and 10th (King Midas tulips), the Fancy Frills gardens in clue 12
couldn't fit 2nd or 7th given the clue itself. Since the bed containing the
statue of Walter Harding opened in 1958 (12) and that with the Swan Wings
tulips in it opened in 2003 (3), the Fancy Frills garden wouldn't be 3rd.
Since the garden with the police chief's statue was opened in 1969 (18) and
the Swan Wings garden in 2003 (3), the Fancy Frills tulip garden wouldn't be
4th. Since the senator wasn't Walter Harding (17), the Fancy Frills tulip
garden wouldn't be 6th. The police chief wasn't Wilhelmina Shelley and the
police chief's statue wasn't among the King Midas tulips (18), so the Fancy
Frills gardens also wouldn't be 8th or 9th. Therefore, the three gardens in
clue 5 couldn't follow with one intervening garden when those in clues 1 and
16 are consecutive. So, the three gardens in clue 16 cannot immediately follow
the three in clue 1 clockwise around Tulip Lake. In the second case where the
three in clue 16 follow those in clue 1 with one intervening garden, the
gardens would be in clockwise order around Tulip Lake: 1st) the Celebration
tulips, 2nd) the painter's statue, 3rd) the statue of Harriet Slater, 5th)
the statue of Daniel Walker, 6th the Swan Wings tulips, and 7th) the statue
of the jazz artist. Again because clue 5 doesn't overlap with either clue 1
or clue 16, the three gardens in clue 5 would have to be the 8th (senator's
statue), 9th (Wilhelmina Shelley's statue), and 10th (King Midas tulips) ones.
Adding clue 12 to what we have, the information in clue 12 itself makes it
impossible for the Fancy Frills gardens to be 3rd or 7th. Since the painter's
statue isn't in with the Fancy Frills tulips (6), the Fancy Frills garden
wouldn't be 2nd. Since the garden with the statue of Walter Harding was first
opened in 1958 (12) and the bed of Swan Wings tulips in 2003 (3), the Fancy
Frills tulip bed wouldn't be 4th. Since the garden with the police chief's
statue was opened in 1969 (18) and the Swan Wings garden in 2003 (3), the
Fancy Frills tulip garden wouldn't be 5th. Finally, since the police chief
wasn't Wilhelmina Shelley and the police chief's statue isn't among the King
Midas tulips (18), the Fancy Frills gardens also wouldn't be 8th or 9th.
Therefore, the three gardens in clue 5 couldn't follow with one intervening
garden when those in clues 1 and 16 are in order with one intervening garden
between them. Therefore, the three gardens in clue 16 cannot follow the three
in clue 1 clockwise around Tulip Lake and those in clue 5 must--either
immediately or with one garden between them. Trying the latter case, we would
have the gardens in clues 1 and 5 around Tulip Lake as follows: 1st) the
Celebration tulips, 2nd) the painter's statue, 3rd) the statue of Harriet
Slater, 5th) the senator's statue, 6th) the statue of Wilhelmina Shelley,
and 7th) the King Midas tulips. The three gardens in clue 16 would then be
8th) the statue of Daniel Walker, 9th) the Swan Wings tulips, and 10th) the
statue of the jazz artist. Adding clue 12 to what we have, the information in
clue 12 itself makes it impossible for the Fancy Frills gardens to be 4th or
6th. Since the painter's statue wasn't among the Fancy Frills tulips (6),
the Fancy Frills gardens wouldn't have been 2nd. Since the senator wasn't
Walter Harding (17), the Fancy Frills tulip garden wouldn't be 3rd. Since
the police chief wasn't Wilhelmina Shelley, the Fancy Frills gardens also
wouldn't be 5th. Since the garden with the police chief's statue was opened
in 1969 (18) and the Swan Wings garden in 2003 (3), the Fancy Frills tulip
garden wouldn't be 8th. Finally, since the painter wasn't Walter Harding (6),
the Fancy Frills gardens wouldn't have been 10th. So, there can be no
intervening garden between those in clues 1 and 5 and the gardens in clues 1
and 5 are in consecutive order around Tulip Lake as follows: 1st) the
Celebration tulips, 2nd) the painter's statue, 3rd) the statue of Harriet
Slater, 4th) the senator's statue, 5th) the statue of Wilhelmina Shelley,
and 6th) the King Midas tulips. The three gardens in clue 16 must follow
these six either next or with one intervening garden. Trying the one
intervening garden, then the three gardens in clue 16 would lie as follows:
8th) the statue of Daniel Walker, 9th) the Swan Wings tulips, and 10th) the
statue of the jazz artist. Adding clue 12 to what we have, the information
in clue 12 itself makes it impossible for the Fancy Frills gardens to be 3rd.
Since the senator wasn't Walter Harding (17), the Fancy Frills tulip garden
wouldn't be 2nd. The police chief wasn't Wilhelmina Shelley and the police
chief's statue wasn't among the King Midas tulips (18), so the Fancy Frills
gardens wouldn't be 4th or 5th. Since the garden with the statue of Walter
Harding was first opened in 1958 (12) and the bed of Swan Wings tulips in 2003
(3), the Fancy Frills tulip bed wouldn't be 7th. Since the garden with the
police chief's statue was opened in 1969 (18) and the Swan Wings garden in
2003 (3), the Fancy Frills tulip garden wouldn't be 8th. Finally, since the
painter wasn't Walter Harding (6), the Fancy Frills gardens wouldn't have been
10th. The three gardens in clue 16 could not follow those in clues 1 and 5
with an intervening garden, so the three gardens in clue 16 are in clockwise
order 7th) the statue of Daniel Walker, 8th) the Swan Wings tulips, and 9th)
the statue of the jazz artist around Tulip Lake. Adding clue 12 to this, the
information in clue 12 itself makes it impossible for the Fancy Frills gardens
to be 3rd or 5th. Since the senator wasn't Walter Harding (17), the Fancy
Frills tulip garden couldn't be 2nd. The police chief wasn't Wilhelmina
Shelley, so the Fancy Frills gardens couldn't be 4th. Since the garden with
the police chief's statue was opened in 1969 (18) and the Swan Wings garden
in 2003 (3), the Fancy Frills tulip garden couldn't be 7th. Finally, since
the painter wasn't Walter Harding (6), the Fancy Frills gardens wouldn't have
been 10th. The Fancy Frills tulips were in the 9th garden with the statue of
the jazz legend, with the police chief's statue in the 10th bed and Walter
Harding's statue among the Celebration tulips in the 1st garden. Since the
Olympic marathoner's statue isn't in the bed with the King Midas or Celebration
tulips (15), by clue 7, the marathoner's statue is among the Swan Wings tulips
and Benjamin Goldsmith's in the bed of King Midas tulips. By clue 8, the
celebrated author was Wilhelmina Shelley and the philanthropist was Benjamin
Goldsmith. Since author Wilhelmina Shelley's statue isn't in the Pillow Talk
tulip garden (11), by clue 20, the inventor was Walter Harding, Ambrose
Millstone was the painter, and Harriet Slater's statue sits among the Pillow
Talk tulips. By clue 13, the educator was Harriet Slater, Robert Tipton was
the state senator, and the Morning Glow tulip garden has author Wilhelmina
Shelley's statue in it. By elimination, Daniel Walker was the explorer. By
clue 4, the Blushing Lady garden has the painter's statue in it, with the
Orange Dynasty tulip bed home to Robert Tipton's statue. By clue 21, Charles
Parkinson was the noted jazz artist, and the police chief's statue is in the
Banja Luka garden. By elimination, the Queen of the Night tulips surround the
explorer's monument. Finally, by clue 22, Thomas Bankhead was chief of
police and Janet O'Brien the Olympic marathon gold medalist. In sum, the
tulip gardens surround Tulip Lake in clockwise order:
- Celebration tulips, inventor Walter Harding
- Blushing Lady tulips, painter Ambrose Millstone
- Pillow Talk tulips, educator Harriet Slater
- Orange Dynasty tulips, state senator Robert Tipton
- Morning Glow tulips, author Wilhelmina Shelley
- King Midas tulips, philanthropist Benjamin Goldsmith
- Queen of the Night tulips, explorer Daniel Walker
- Swan Wings tulips, Olympic champion Janet O'Brien
- Fancy Frills tulips, jazz musician Charles Parkinson
- Banja Luka tulips, police chief Thomas Bankhead
