contains the characters WORD and a blank cell in some order, so that no
character or space can be repeated in a row or a column. By clue 1, in
row 4, WR are in consecutive columns. W can't be in column 1,
since by clue 4 D would then be in row 5 of column 1 and touch the W--no.
If W were in column 2, the R in row 5 would be in column 2 (clue 5), which
it is not (7). If W were in column 4 and R in column 5 of row 4, R would
be in column 4 of row 5, with space in column 5 of row 5 (7). By clue 4,
the row 5 D would be in column 1. By clue 3, the O in column 5 would be
in row 3. Combining clues 2 and 8, the only possible arrangement is
that the column 1 O would be in row 1, the space would be in row 2, and
the R would be in row 3--but the column 1 W would be the second W in row
4. So, in clue 1, the row 4 W is in column 3 and the row 4 R in column 4.
Then, by clue 7, the R in row 5 is in column 5. In column 1, D is the
4th letter. For D to be in row 4, space would be in row 5--but then O
would be in row 4 (8). So, the column 1 D is in row 5. In column 5, D
can't be in row 1 (9) or row 3 (6). If D were in row 4, O couldn't be the
3rd letter down column 5, which it is (3). D in column 5 is in row 2.
Combining clues 2 and 8, the only possible arrangements are that the
column 1 O would be in row 1, the space would be in row 2, and the R would
be in row 3--but the column 1 W would be the second W in row 4--or that
the R is in row 1, the O in row 3, and the space in row 4--by elimination,
correct. W in column 1 is in row 2. By clue 3, O in column 5 is in row 4.
Then D in row 4 is in column 2. By clue 5, W in column 2 is in row 1 and
R in column 2 in row 2. Then O in column 2 is in row 5, and the column 2
space is in row 3. The fifth R is in row 3, column 3. Then D in row 3 is
in column 4 and W in row 3 in column 5. The column 5 space is in row 1.
In row 5, W is in column 4, with space in column 3. In column 3, D is in
row 1, with O then in row 2. Finally, in column 4, O is in row 1 and
space in row 2. In sum, Word Square 9 contains the word WORD as
