From the introduction, the six watercolors sold for six different prices;
the lowest-priced sold for $150, with the six selling for a total of $2200
(clue 1). By clue 2, the painting by Eustis sold for twice as much as the
painting "Monk's Cave"; while by clue 11, Marie's work cost twice as much as
"County Courthouse," which sold for twice what Farmer's painting did. Marie
in clue 11 can't be Eustis in clue 2 or both "Monk's Cave" and "County
Courthouse" would have sold for the same amount. If Marie had painted
"Monk's Cave," by clues 1, 2, and 11, the least the six paintings could
have cost would have been $150, $300, $600, and $1200--a total of $2250
and a conflict with clue 1. Farmer didn't do "Monk's Cave" (8), so Eustis
didn't paint "County Courthouse" or Farmer's work and "Monk's Cave" would
have cost the same amount. So, between clues 2 and 11, five of the six
works are named: Eustis' painting, "Monk's Cave," Marie's work, "County
Courthouse," and Farmer's watercolor. By clue 3, "Indian Mounds" cost $100
more than the watercolor by Arliss, which cost $100 more than Lynda's work.
Arliss didn't do "County Courthouse" (5) or "Monk's Cave" (8). If Arliss
were Marie, given that the least Farmer's painting could have sold for is
$150 (1), by clues 11 and 3, Farmer's watercolor would have sold for $150,
"County Courthouse" for $300, Marie Arliss' work for $600, "Indian Mounds"
for $700, and Lynda's painting for $500--a total of $2250 and a contradiction
of clue 1. So, Arliss' watercolor is the sixth to the five named in clues 2
and 11. Arliss' painting didn't sell for $150 (3), so either "Monk's Cave" in
clue 2 or Farmer's work in clue 11 sold for $150. If "Monk's Cave" sold for
$150, Eustis' painting would have cost $300 (2). Eustis then couldn't have
painted "Indian Mounds" or Lynda's watercolor would have sold for $100 (3).
If Farmer had painted "Indian Mounds," by clues 2 and 3, Lynda would have to be
Eustis or have to have painted "Monk's Cave." If Lynda were Eustis, combining clues
2, 3, and 11 would give totals of $150 ("Monk's Cave"), $300 (Lynda Eustis),
$400 (Arliss), $500 (Farmer for "Indian Mounds"), $1000 ("County Courthouse"),
and $2000 (Marie)--a total of $4350. If Lynda had painted "Monk's Cave,"
combining clues 2, 3, and 11 would give totals of $150 (Lynda for "Monk's
Cave"), $300 (Eustis), $250 (Arliss), $350 (Farmer for "Indian Mounds"), $700
("County Courthouse"), and $1400 (Marie)--a total of $3150. So, Farmer
wouldn't have painted "Indian Mounds." If Marie had painted "Indian Mounds,"
Lynda couldn't have done "County Courthouse" or Farmer's work would have
cost $100. If Lynda were Farmer, by clue 2, Lynda's painting cost X and
Marie's 4X and by clue 3 4X - X = $200 or X = $66.66. Marie's work would
have cost $266.66, Arliss' $166.66, Lynda's $66.66, and "County Courthouse"
$133.33--a total of $1083.33. Therefore, there is no way "Monk's Cave"
could have cost the low of $150. Farmer's painting sold for $150, "County
Courthouse" for $300, and Marie's watercolor for $600. "Indian Mounds" in
clue 3 can't be Farmer's work. If "Indian Mounds" were Marie's work,
Arliss' painting would have sold for $500 and Lynda's for $400. If Lynda
were Eustis, "Monk's Cave" would have cost $200--a total of $2150. If Lynda
had painted "Monk's Cave," Eustis' watercolor would have sold for $800
(2)--a total of $2750. So, Eustis painted "Indian Mounds." If Lynda in
clue 3 had painted "Monk's Cave," by clue 2, "Monk's Cave" would have sold
for $200 and "Indian Mounds" for $400, with Arliss' work costing $300--a
total of $1950. If Lynda in clue 3 were Farmer, Eustis' work would have
cost $350, Arliss' $250, and "Monk's Cave" $175--a total of $1825. Lynda
painted "County Courthouse." Then Eustis' watercolor cost $500, Arliss'
work cost $400 (3), and "Monk's Cave" sold for $250--a total of $2200
matching clue 1. By clue 4, Marie painted "Grand Falls." Her surname
is Brewer (6). Then by clue 6, Lynda is Davis, and Cramer painted "Monk's
Cave." By clue 4, Kevin isn't Arliss or Farmer, who painted "The Bandstand"
and "Freedman's School" or vice versa. Kevin also isn't Cramer (9); he is
Eustis. By clue 10, James isn't Arliss; nor is he Farmer, whose painting
cost the least. James is Cramer. Then by clue 10, the "Freedman's School"
is Farmer's work and "The Bandstand" Arliss'. Finally, by clue 7, Farmer
is Heather and Arliss Ian. In sum, the six watercolors sold Saturday at
Summerset Gallery's exhibit are
- "Grand Falls" by Marie Brewer for $600
- "Indian Mounds" by Kevin Eustis for $500
- "The Bandstand" by Ian Arliss for $400
- "County Courthouse" by Lynda Davis for $300
- "Monk's Cave" by James Cramer for $250
- "Freedman's School" by Heather Farmer for $150.
