From the introduction, the five boys cabins at Camp Running Bear are in a row
facing Lake Hiawatha and are numbered 1-5 left-to-right as seen from the lake.
By clue 1, Mohawk Cabin is directly between the cabins where Bo and college
student Moose are counselors; while by clue 5, Oneida is between the cabins
with Dan and Trout as counselors. So, either Mohawk and Oneida are next to
each other among the three inside cabins, or Mohawk and Oneida are the
cabins flanking the middle one. If Mohawk and Oneida Cabins were next to
each other, by clue 5, either Dan or Trout would lead the Mohawk campers. If
Dan were the counselor assigned to Mohawk, by clue 5, Trout would head the
cabin on the other side of Oneida from Mohawk. By clue 1, then, Oneida's
counselor would be either Bo or Moose. If he were Bo, Moose would be
in charge of the cabin on the other side of Mohawk from Oneida. Since Bo
isn't counselor Rivers (clue 4), by clue 8, Alex would be Moose, Dan would
be Rivers, and Iroquois would be the outside cabin next to Alex's. Chris
would be Trout and would lead Seneca Cabin (3), with Alex then counselor in
Huron. However, there is no way for Eddie's cabin to be next to Seneca (2),
so this arrangement fails. Oneida's counselor thus wouldn't be Bo. If
Oneida's counselor were Moose, Bo would be in charge of the cabin on the
other side of Mohawk from Oneida. By clue 8, Alex would be Moose, with Dan
Rivers and Iroquois Cabin Trout's responsibility. By clue 2, since Eddie
isn't Trout, Bo's cabin would be Seneca, with Eddie's cabin Huron then on
the outside of the row next to Seneca. However, Chris's cabin would then
have to be next to Alex's--no (3). So, Oneida's counselor couldn't be
Moose; and Dan then couldn't be assigned to Mohawk if it were next to
Oneida. Trying Mohawk and Oneida adjacent and Trout as counselor in
Mohawk, Dan would be in charge of the cabin on the other side of Oneida
from Mohawk. By clue 1, either Bo or Moose would be the counselor for
Oneida Cabin. If Bo were, Moose would lead the boys in the cabin on the
other side of Mohawk from Oneida. However, since Bo isn't Rivers (4),
there is no way for clue 8 to work. If Moose were the Oneida counselor,
Bo would be in charge of the cabin on the other side of Oneida from Mohawk.
Again, however, there is no way for clue 8 to
work. Therefore, Mohawk and Oneida Cabins are not adjacent and must be
separated by the middle cabin. By clue 5, the counselor in the middle
cabin is Dan or Trout. If he were Dan, Trout would lead the cabin
outside Oneida. Then by clue 1, Dan would be Moose; and Bo would have
charge of the cabin outside Mohawk. However, since Bo isn't Rivers (4),
there is no way for clue 8 to work. So, in clue 5, the counselor in the
middle cabin is Trout, with Dan counselor in the outside cabin adjacent
to Oneida. By clue 1, Trout is Bo; and Moose leads the outside cabin
next to Mohawk. By clue 8, Oneida's counselor is Alex; Dan is Rivers,
and Bo Trout is counselor in Iroquois. By clue 2, Eddie is Mohawk's
counselor and Moose Seneca's. By elimination Dan leads Huron Cabin;
and Chris is Moose. By clue 6, Eddie is Woods and Alex Lodge. Finally,
by clue 7, Alex Lodge's Oneida Cabin is #2, with Huron #1, Iroquois #3,
Mohawk #4, and Seneca #5. In sum, the five boys cabins at Camp Running
Bear are lined up along Lake Hiawatha as follows:
- #1 -- Huron, Dan Rivers
- #2 -- Oneida, Alex Lodge
- #3 -- Iroquois, Bo Trout
- #4 -- Mohawk, Eddie Woods
- #5 -- Seneca, Chris Moose
