contains the characters GAME and a blank cell in some order, so that no
character or space can be repeated in a row or a column. By clue 1, G is
followed immediately by E across row 1. The G in row 1 can't be in column 3
(clue 5) or column 2 (8) and is in column 1 or column 4. Neither the A (4)
nor the space (7) is in column 5 of row 1. If M were in row 1 of column 5,
M would be 4th across row 1, which it is not (9). Therefore, the E in clue
1 must be in column 5 of row 1, with the G in column 4. By clue 2, A is the
1st letter across row 5; while by clue 6, A is the 3rd letter across row 4.
A thus cannot be in row 5 or row 4 of column 5. By clue 4, A is in row 3
of column 5 and M in row 2. By clue 3, E is the 2nd letter across row 3
and is then in either column 2 or column 3. If E were in column 2, then
G would be in row 4 of column 2 (8). In column 5, G would be in row 5 and
the space in row 4. By clue 5, down column 3, M would be in row 1 and G
in row 2. By elimination, the G in row 3 would be in column 1--no (10).
So, by clue 3, the E across row 3 is in column 3. By clue 8, the E and G
in column 2 are in rows 2 and 3 or in rows 4 and 5. If the E and G were in
rows 4 and 5, the G in row 3 would be in column 1--again no (10). By clue 8,
the E and G in column 2 are in rows 2 and 3. By clue 3, then, in row 3,
the space is in column 1 and the M in column 4. By clue 2, the A in row 5
is in column 1. By clue 5, M is followed by G down column 3. The G can't
be in row 2, since the A and space are already placed in column 1; the G is
in row 5 and the M in row 4 of column 3. By elimination, the G in row 2 is
in column 1. Then in column 1, M is in row 1 and E in row 4. In row 5, M
is in column 2, with E then in column 4 and space in column 5. G in row 4
completes column 5. By clue 6, in row 4, A is in column 4 and space in column
2. By elimination, A is in column 2, row 1 and space in column 4, row 2.
Finally, then, in column 3, space is in row 1 and A in row 2. In sum,
