By clue 2, Jerry lost twice as much weight as Hart; while by clue 4,
Willa lost twice as much weight as the tennis player. Between the two
clues, then, either Willa is Hart, Jerry is the tennis player, or four
different contestants are named. If Willa were Hart, since the range
of weight lost was 15-60 lbs. (clue 1), Jerry would have lost the high
of 60, Willa Hart would have lost 30, and the tennis player would have
lost the low of 15. By clue 3, Tom would be the fourth contestant,
since he didn't lose the low of 15 lbs. Since West didn't lose either
the high or low, West would be the fifth one (3). The news anchor in
clue 3 would be Willa Hart, with West then losing 40 lbs. and Tom 45.
However, there is no way clue 8 can work given this arrangement. So,
in clues 2 and 4, Willa isn't Hart. If Jerry were the tennis player,
since the range of weight lost was 15-60 lbs. (clue 1), Willa would have
lost the high of 60, tennis star Jerry would have lost 30, and Hart would
have lost the low of 15. By clue 3, Tom would be the fourth contestant,
since he didn't lose the low of 15 lbs. Since West didn't lose the high
of 60 lbs. (3), West would be either Jerry or the fifth contestant. If
West were Jerry, the news anchor in clue 3 would have lost 20 lbs. and
Tom would have lost 35 lbs. However, there is no way clue 8 can work
given this arrangement. If West were the fifth contestant, the news
anchor in clue 3 would be Hart, with West then losing 25 and Tom 30
lbs.--a conflict with the introduction, which says no two contestants
lost the same amount of weight. So, in clues 2 and 4, Jerry isn't the
tennis player. Four different contestants are given in clues 2 and 4:
Jerry lost twice as much weight as Hart, and Willa lost twice as much
weight as the tennis player. Tom in clue 3 is either Hart, the tennis
player, or the fifth contestant to the four in clues 2 and 4. If Tom
were the fifth contestant, either Tom, Jerry, or Willa would have lost
the high of 60 lbs. If Tom had lost the 60 lbs., West would have lost
55 and the news anchor 45 (3). Then either Hart or the tennis player
would have lost the low of 15 lbs., with either Jerry or Willa then
dropping 30 (2, 4). However, the other of the pair in clues 2 and 4
who lost the 30 and 15 lbs. would have lost 55 and 45--impossible, since
the weight losses were a number and its double. So, Tom wouldn't have
lost 60 lbs. If Tom were the fifth contestant and Jerry lost the high
of 60, with Hart losing 30 (2), the tennis player would have lost the
low of 15 and Willa then 30 also--no, since no two lost the same amount
of weight. Similarly, if Tom were the fifth contestant and Willa lost
the high of 60, with the tennis player losing 30 (4), Hart would have
lost the low of 15 and Jerry then 30 also--no, since no two lost the same
amount of weight. So, Tom in clue 3 isn't the fifth contestant and is
either Hart or the tennis player. If Tom were the tennis player, by
clues 1 and 3, Tom lost at least 30 lbs--and by clues 1 and 4 Tom
wouldn't have lost more than 30. So, Tom would have lost 30 lbs.,
Willa 60 (4), West 25, and the news anchor 15 (3). The news anchor
would be Hart--but then Jerry also would have lost 30 lbs. (2)--from
the introduction, no. So, Tom must be Hart. By clues 1 and 3, Tom
lost at least 30 lbs--and by clues 1 and 2 Tom couldn't have lost more
than 30. So, Tom lost 30 lbs., Jerry lost 60 (2), West dropped 25,
and the news anchor 15 (3). By clues 1 and 4, West must be the tennis
player, and Willa lost 50 lbs. Alec is West and Mia the news anchor
(7). By clue 8, Tom Hart is the talk show host. Jerry is the comedian
and Willa the rock star (6). Then by clue 6, Mia is Stone. Finally, by
clue 5, Willa is Brown and Jerry King. In sum, the "Losing Big" results
are as follows:
- Jerry King, comedian, 60 lbs.
- Willa Brown, rock star, 50 lbs.
- Tom Hart, talk show host, 30 lbs.
- Alec West, tennis player, 25 lbs.
- Mia Stone, news anchor, 15 lbs.
