By clue 8, Mary is gardener-of-the-month the month before Ms. Gorman, who is
featured the month before the woman who loves petunias. By clue 14, the member
who is surrounded by daffodils is shown the month before Ms. Zimmer, who is
in the calendar the month before Terri. Since Ms. Gorman isn't the one who
adores daffodils (13) and Mary isn't Ms. Zimmer (8, 17), there can be no
commonality between the two clues, so three different calendar gardeners in
consecutive monthly order are named in each of clues 8 and 14. By clue 1,
three consecutive gardeners-of-the-month first-to-last are Ms. Egan, the one
who loves begonias, and Kate. If there were overlap between clue 1 and clue
8, Ms. Gorman would have to be begonia lover--no (10); Ms. Egan would be the
member who prefers petunias--no (20); or Kate would be Ms. Gorman--no (13).
So, there is no overlap between clues 1 and 8. Similarly, since Terri isn't
Ms. Egan (20) and Kate doesn't have daffodils on her page (13), there is no
overlap between clues 1 and 14. Three different sets of three consecutive
monthly calendar gardeners are named in the three clues. By clue 21, the
member who loves marigolds appears one month before Wanda, who is shown one
month before Ms. French. Checking whether there is any commonality between
clue 21 and clue 8, Ms. French doesn't have petunias as her favorite flower
(12), Wanda doesn't have petunias as her favorite (7), and Mary isn't Ms.
French (8, 17)--so there is no overlap between the two clues. Trying clues
21 and 14 for overlap, Terri isn't the calendar gardener who loves marigolds
(23) and Ms. French doesn't appear with daffodils (12), so there is no overlap
between clues 21 and 14. Finally, Wanda isn't the begonia buff (7), Kate isn't
the marigold fan (3), and Wanda isn't Ms. Egan (7)--so there is no overlap
between clues 21 and 1. Therefore, four different sets of three consecutive
gardeners-of-the-month are named in clues 8, 14, 1, and 21; and the only
arrangement that can work so that there is no commonality among the clues is
that in some order the clues describe the winners for January-March,
April-June, July-September, and October-December. By clue 5, Ms. Underwood,
who has hyacinths on the calendar page with her, appears one month before
Patti, who has snapdragons as her favorite. We test to see how clue 5 fits
with the other clues. Since Patti isn't Ms. Gorman (4), there is no overlap
between clues 5 and 8. The only possible overlap between clues 5 and 14 is
that Ms. Underwood is Terri. Then Patti, who loves snapdragons, would have
to be the first woman named in clue 8--no, Mary is; in clue 1, as Ms. Egan--no
(4); or in clue 21--no, the member who loves marigolds is. So, there is no
commonality between clues 5 and 14. Since Patti isn't Ms. Egan (4), the only
overlap possible between clues 5 and 1 is if Ms. Underwood were Kate. But
again, Patti, who has snapdragons as her favorite, would have to be the first
person named in clue 8--no, Mary is; in clue 14--no, the daffodils lover is;
or in clue 21--no, the one who loves marigolds is. Therefore, clue 5 must
overlap clue 21: Wanda is Ms. Underwood and has hyacinths on her page, and
Ms. French is Patti and has snapdragons on hers. By clue 11, Vicki Young is
featured one month before Ms. Quincy, who grows orchids. We test to see how
clue 11 fits with what we already know. If Mary were Ms. Quincy in clue 8,
Vicki Young would have to be the last person named in clue 14, clue 1, or
clue 21--no. If Vicki Young were the gardener who preferred petunias, Ms.
Quincy, who loves orchids, would have to be the first person named in clue 14,
clue 1, or clue 21--no. So, clues 11 and 8 have no commonality. There is also
no possible overlap with the order in clue 14 or the order in clues 5 and 21
combined. The only possible overlap is between clue 11 and clue 1: Vicki
Young loves begonias and Kate Quincy fancies orchids. By clue 18, Ms.
Christian is on the March page and must be the last person named in clue 8,
clue 14, clues 1-11, or clues 21-5. Since Ms. Christian isn't Terri (18),
Ms. Christian loves petunias; and by clue 8, Mary is the Greenlake Garden
Club member for January, with Ms. Gorman featured for February. By clue 22,
consecutive monthly appearances are by the women who love asters and violets.
Since Ms. Gorman doesn't prefer violets (10), neither of the two in clue 22
can be in clue 8. Nobody in clues 1-11 or 21-5 is the one who loves asters.
Since Terri doesn't love violets (23), in clue 14, she must love asters.
Then Ms. Egan in clue 1 has violets on her page, and the three gardeners in
clue 1 immediately follow the three in clue 14 on the calendar pages. By
clue 6, the woman who loves tulips appears the month before Ms. Davis does.
Ms. Davis must be Terri, and Ms. Zimmer is pictured with tulips. Ruth is in
the calendar the month before Ms. Irons is (15). Ruth must be Ms. Christian.
Ms. Irons then isn't January's gardener, nor is Ms. Billings (2); Ms.
Ashford is. By clue 19, Mary is the geranium lover, and Leah is Ms. Gorman.
By elimination, Leah has roses on her calendar page. Ms. Billings isn't the
one who delights in daffodils (2), so Ms. Irons is; and Ms. Billings has
marigolds as her favorite. We now know that daffodil-lover Irons appears on
the page for April (15), so Ms. Zimmer is May's gardener, Ms. Davis is June's
(14), Ms. Egan is July's, Ms. Young August's, Ms. Quincy September's (1), Ms.
Billings October's, Ms. Underwood November's, and Ms. French December's. By
clue 16, Joan is Ms. Egan. Nora is Ms. Zimmer (3). By clue 9, Sandy is
Ms. Irons and Helen Ms. Billings. In sum, the Greenlake Garden Club's Flower
Calendar 2007 is as follows:
- January -- Mary Ashford, geraniums
- February -- Leah Gorman, roses
- March -- Ruth Christian, petunias
- April -- Sandy Irons, daffodils
- May --Nora Zimmer, tulips
- June -- Terri Davis, asters
- July -- Joan Egan, violets
- August -- Vicki Young, begonias
- September -- Kate Quincy, orchids
- October -- Helen Billings, marigolds
- November -- Wanda Underwood, hyacinths
- December -- Patti French, snapdragons
