| From the introduction, each row and each column of Word Square 11
contains the characters ROSE and a blank cell in some order, so that no
character or space can be repeated in a row or a column.  By clue 9, S is
in row 3, column 3.  By clue 1, E is the 2nd letter across row 1; while
by clue 6, E is the 4th letter down column 3.  The E in row 1 therefore
must be in column 2.  By clue 2, R is the 4th letter down column 1; while
by clue 8, R is the 4th letter across row 4.  The R in column 1 must then
be in row 5.  By clue 4, in column 4, E is immediately followed by S in
the next cell.  Then either E is in row 3 and S in row 4, or E is in row 4
and S in row 5.  Trying E in row 4 and S in row 5, S in row 1 would be in
column 5 (clue 7) and the R in row 4 in column 5 (8).  By clue 3, the column 2
O couldn't be in row 5, so space is in row 5 of column 2.  Then O in column 2
is in row 2 (3), with R in row 3 and S in row 4.  By clue 10, the O in row 4
couldn't be in column 1; it would be in column 3, with space in column 1 of
row 4.  O would be in column 5 and E in column 3 of row 5.  By clue 5, the
column 3 space would be in row 1, with R then in row 2.  In row 1, R would be
in column 4 and O in column 1.  In column 1, S would be in row 2 and E in
row 3.  Then in row 3, O would be in column 4 and space in column 5--a
conflict with clue 11.  So, in column 4, E is not in row 4 with S in row 5.
The E in column 4 is in row 3 and S in row 4.  S in row 1 is in column 5 (7)
and the R in row 4 in column 5 (8).  The R in row 3 is in column 2, with the
space in column 1 and the O in column 5 (11).  Then by clue 3, the column 2
O is in row 2.  By elimination, in column 2, the space appears in row 4 and
the S in row 5.  The S in row 2 is in column 1.  The O is in row 1 and the E
in row 4.  The row 4 O in column 3.  The O in column 4 is in row 5.  By
clue 6, E is in row 5 of column 3.  The row 5 space is in column 5. The
column 3 space is in row 1 (5), with R in column 3 in row 2.  E in column 5
is in row 2, with R in row 1 in column 4 and space in column 4 in row 2.
