From the introduction, no two stores gave away the same number of free
water ices. By clue 2, Marie's store gave away 500 more cups than the
Westport franchise, which gave away 500 more than Ecker's store; while by
clue 5, the Marymount location gave away 500 more ices than Lana's store.
Either there is some commonality between the two clues or all five stores
are named. If the Marymount store in clue 5 were owned by Marie in clue 2,
Lana would own the Westport franchise--no (clue 9). The Marymount store
isn't owned by Ecker (8). Therefore, the Marymount store is a fourth one
to the three in clue 2. Lana cannot be Ecker or the Westport and Marymount
stores would have given away the same number of ices (2,5), contradicting
the introduction; nor does Lana have the Westport franchise (9).
Lana is the fifth store owner to the three in clue 2. In clues 2 and 5,
then, either Ecker's store in clue 2 or Lana's in clue 5 gave away the low
of 500 cups of ice (1). If Lana's store had given away the 500 free ices,
with the Marymount store then giving away 1,000 (5), the Lakeview store in
clue 4 would have to be Marie's or Ecker's. If the Lakeview store were
Marie's and Nick owned the Westport store, by clues 2 and 4, Marie's store
would have given away 1,000, Nick's Westport store 500, and Ecker's store
0 ices. If the Lakeview store were Marie's and Nick were Ecker, by clues
2 and 4, Marie's store would have given away 2,000 and Nick Ecker's store
1,000 ices--the same number as the Marymount store and a contradiction with
the introduction. If the Lakeview store were Marie's and Nick owned the
Marymount store, Marie's store would have given away 2,000 and Ecker's store
1,000 ices, the same number as Nick's Marymount store--no. If Ecker owned
the Lakeview store, Nick in clue 4 would have the Marymount location. Then
Ecker's store would have given away 2,000 free ices (4), the Westport store
would have given away 2,500, and Marie's store would have given away 3,000
(2)--a total of 9,000 and a conflict with the clue 1 total of 7,500.
Therefore, Lana's store in clue 5 didn't give away the low of 500 cups;
Ecker's did, with the Westport franchise giving away 1,000 and Marie's
store 1,500 free ices (2). The 3,000 cup total in clue 2 leaves 4,500 (1)
free ices for the Marymount store and Lana's franchise in clue 5, so that
Lana's store's X and the Marymount store's X + 500 make 2X + 500 = 4,500,
or X = 2,000. Lana's store gave away 2,000 and the Marymount store 2,500
free cups of water ice. By clue 4, the Lakeview store is Lana's and Nick's
franchise location is Westport. By clue 8, Ecker is Kevin; and John owns
the Marymount location. Kevin has the Sunnyvale store and Marie the one in
Brookline (6). Marie isn't Archer, Draper (3), or Cassidy (7) and is
Barnes. By clue 9, neither Lana nor Nick is Archer; so John is. Finally,
Nick is Cassidy and Lana Draper (4). In sum, the metro Lita's Water Ices
celebrated the first day of spring by giving away free ices as follows:
- Marymount, John Archer, 2,500
- Lakeview, Lana Draper, 2,000
- Brookline, Marie Barnes, 1,500
- Westport, Nick Cassidy, 1,000
- Sunnyvale, Kevin Ecker, 500
