By clue 1, Erin's tulips were judged one place higher than Ms. Knight's,
whose tulips were judged one place higher than the Flaming Parrot tulips;
while by clue 5, Helen's tulips were judged one place higher than Ms. Post's
tulips, which were judged one place higher than the Red Emperor tulips. So,
either there is some commonality between the clues or all six prize winners
are named. Since Helen isn't Ms. Knight (clue 9) and Erin isn't Ms. Post
(10), if there were overlap between clues 1 and 5, Helen would have
grown the Flaming Parrots or Erin would have grown the Red Emperors.
Trying the first possibility, we combine clues 1 and 5 so that these five
prize winners would have finished in consecutive first-to-last order: Erin,
Ms. Knight, Helen with the Flaming Parrot tulips, Ms. Post, and the woman
who grew the Red Emperor tulips. Trying clue 8 with this arrangement,
Grace could be Ms. Knight with Ms. Oates having entered the Flaming Parrot
variety--no (4); Grace could be Ms. Post with Ms. Oates then having grown
the Red Emperor tulips--also no (4); or Grace could have won the contest
with Erin then Ms. Oates and Ms. Knight having grown the Indian Summers.
By clue 11, the American Dreams would have been grown by Ms. Post and the
Red Emperors by Ms. Mills. Helen would be Ms. Lord and Grace Ms. Nix (9).
Grace would have entered the Big Chief variety (3)--no (12). So, the first
possible overlap between clues 1 and 5, that Helen grew the Flaming Parrot
tulips, fails. Trying the second possibility, we combine clues 1 and 5 so
that these five prize winners would have finished in consecutive first-to-last
order: Helen, Ms. Post, Erin with the Red Emperor tulips, Ms. Knight, and the
woman who entered the Flaming Parrot variety of tulips. Trying clue 8 with
this arrangement, Grace could have won the contest with Ms. Post having
entered the Indian Summers--no (2); Grace could be Ms. Post with Ms. Oates
having grown the Red Emperors--no (4); or Grace could be Ms. Knight with
Ms. Oates having grown the Flaming Parrot variety of tulips--also no (4).
So, the second possible overlap between clues 1 and 5, that Erin grew the
Red Emperor tulips, also fails. All six prize winners are named between
clues 1 and 5. Therefore, either Erin finished 1st and Helen 4th or vice
versa. If Erin had placed 1st and Helen 4th, by clues 1 and 5, Ms. Knight
would have grown the 2nd-place tulips, the Flaming Parrot variety would
have been judged 3rd-best, Ms. Post's entry would have won 5th place, and the
Red Emperor tulips would have been 6th. Trying clue 8 with this arrangement,
Grace could be Ms. Knight with Ms. Oates then having entered the Flaming Parrot
variety of tulips--no (4); or Grace could have placed 3rd with Ms. Post then
having grown the Indian Summers--no (2). Therefore, Erin did not win 1st
prize; Helen's tulips placed 1st and Erin's 4th. From clues 5 and 1,
Ms. Post's tulips won 2nd prize, the Red Emperor variety was judged 3rd-best,
Ms. Knight garnered 5th place, and the Flaming Parrot tulips were awarded
6th place. Since Grace Ms. Oates didn't grow the Red Emperor tulips (4),
isn't Ms. Post (8). By clue 8, Grace won 3rd prize, Ms. Oates is Erin, and
the Indian Summers were grown by Ms. Knight. By clue 11, the American Dream
tulips were judged 2nd, and Ms. Mills is Grace. Helen is Ms. Lord and Ms. Nix
won 6th prize (9). Helen Lord grew the Big Chief variety of tulips (3) and
Erin Oates the Pink Impression variety. Neither Ingrid (6) nor Joanne (7)
placed 2nd, so Faith did. Finally, Ingrid is Ms. Knight and Joanne
Ms. Nix (6). In sum, the winners of the Summerset Garden Club Tulip Contest
are
- 1st -- Helen Lord, Big Chief
- 2nd -- Faith Post, American Dream
- 3rd -- Grace Mills, Red Emperor
- 4th -- Erin Oates, Pink Impression
- 5th -- Ingrid Knight, Indian Summer
- 6th -- Joanne Nix, Flaming Parrot
